AW@L Radio - Smash the State Report: May 24, 2013

Tar sands, toxins and line9 pipeline resistance in Sarnia, mountains of Koch's coke, banning bee killers, being transinclusive and including refugees + more!

From the May 24th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - A Tribe Called Red's The Road kicks off the show as it leads into an update on the battle of Ron Plain, an Indigenous land defender who has been dragged into the colonial courts for his participation in #idleNoMore protests which blocked a CN rail line which brings toxins into Sarnia’s chemical valley - the land of the Aamjiwnaang Anishnaabe. Plain wants to know the background of the relationship between judge Brown and CN rail. Brown issued injunctions against several rail line blockades, at the behest of the rail company. Dan also comments on not giving space to colonial voices when reading news (its not censorship).

Remaining in Sarnia, we read the report from Amanda Lickers (of the Coalition Against Line 9) on the recent rally march and disruption of a tar sands conference in the city. Indigenous folks from  Aamjiwnaang and Walpole island along side non-native allies marched through the police lines while chanting "Piplelines Spill, Tar Sands Kill!" right to the windows of the conference centre where inside youth activist Vanessa Grey was holding a banner that read "You Are Killing My Generation!" on stage as the keynote from TD bank spoke.

Staying with the tar sands - we announce the #TarSandsAbsurdity of the week with the revelation that all the toxic sand leftover in the refining process of tarsands bitumen is being stockpiled (with 79 million tonnes in canada) and sold as even dirty energy to poor nations (with all the unaccounted for associated carbon emissions).  A 3 story tall mountain of the tar sands coke is being added to on the shoreline in Detroit, opposite Windsor.

Oilpocalypse Now! from Test Their Logik transitions us from oil to water as we report on the intervention of EcoJustice in the appeal that Nestle water launched in ontario so they could pump water even during drought conditions in their Guelph plant.

From protecting water to protecting bees - we suggest people sign the petition to tell Lowes and HomeDepot to stop selling bee killing neonicotinoids pesticides.  Dan then reads and comments on the statement from ecowarrior Aric McBay  which clarifies his (non)–involvement in deep green resistance and affirms his support for trans inclusion, then we move into With Friends Like These by Propagandhi. Following on the same theme, we note a post from the earth first newswire called Taking Steps to Trans Allyship which includes 8 initial ones to take.

We play When didi gets her donkey from Geoff Berner, who released a new video for the delightful song.

Going to migrant justice we note the 10 year anniversary of the documentary El Contrato which looks at temporary foreign farm workers in Leamington Ontario.  A short called Teo in Toronto was released to mark the event.  We also note the release of a documentary by rabble.ca’s Karl Nerenberg called Never Come Back which looks at the plight of Roma people applying for refugee status in canada.

We close out the show with Test Their Logik’s God Bless The Grass and remind folks to check out the indiegogo campaign for the toronto based hip hop duo.
